Owner Operator Program Requirements
Following are the owner operator program requirements for owner-ops that would like to drive with us. Program requirements ensure safety, compliance and compatibility with our trailers.
Age Requirements
- Be at least 22 years old
Commercial License & Driving Criteria
- Current Class A, Commercial Driver’s License
- 6 months of (Class A) driving experience within the last 3 years
Equipment Requirements
- Must select, purchase, finance and maintain their own tractor
- Must be able to pass inspection
- Fifth wheel height of 48″ or less
- West 11 regional or 48 State preference must be CARB Compliant
- Less than 7 years old (waiver available for Eastern states)
Business Requirements
Have a business registered with the applicable Secretary of State
- Have a state Uniform Business Identifier (or equivalent) other than a social security number
- No businesses registered in or drivers who are residents of the states of Washington, Massachusetts or New York
- Obtain all licenses and permits to operate the business
- Responsible for filing state and federal taxes for the business
- Responsible for operating the business in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and all other applicable state and federal laws and regulations
Employment History – 2 years verified
- Verifiable and stable work history
- Work experience matches the job
- Backing with a 53’ trailer
- Interaction with customers
- Dispatch or communication via a mobile in-cab device
Motor Vehicle Record – 3 years verified
- No Failure to Appear on Motor Vehicle Record (unless cleared by legal verification)
- No more than 3 moving violations within the last 3 years
- Accidents within the past 3 years are subject to review of the facts to determine preventability / fault
Physical Requirements
- Must meet D.O.T. requirements
- Be able to perform the essential physical requirements of the job as detailed on the job description with or without reasonable accommodation
- Must have a current D.O.T. medical card and be registered in their home state if required
Background Check
- Must successfully complete and pass pre-employment urine and hair follicle tests
- No failures of a random drug test or refusal to test within the last 3 years
- Verification of employment and CSA safety history within the last 3 years
Criminal Record – 7 years verified
- A felony conviction will not necessarily bar from employment, Interstate reviews applicants with record of the following convictions or active cases.
- Any Felony Sex Crime within 7 years from conviction date
- Any Aggravated Crime where a weapon was used within 7 years from the conviction date
- Any Theft, Burglaries or other crimes of property within 7 years from the conviction date
- Motor-vehicle related alcohol or drug offenses within 7 years from the conviction
- Driving license suspensions or serious motor vehicle offenses within 3 years from the date of application
- Applicants who are on probation may be required to provide documentation of their ability to travel interstate, if it is a job requirement
